Heatwave

We, like the rest of the country, are suffering from above-average temperatures. Hardly anyone around here has a pool; it rarely gets hot enough to make maintaining one worthwhile. Last year it stayed so cool that we never switched from flannel to cotton sheets on the bed.

Drinking water alone doesn't seem to combat the heat, so I've been making pitchers and gallons of lemonade and peach iced tea. Finally, a use for all those bags of lemons I keep buying!

Yesterday we decided to head out to the lake to cool down. Lake Crescent is a 10-mile-long glacial-carved relic of the last ice age and is fed by mountain snow. At more than 600 feet deep its crystal clear waters rarely warm up enough for comfortable swimming, but it rarely gets this hot here, either.

We got to the lake in the afternoon, after many people had already headed for home, so we were able to stake out a private bit of beach. We were soon joined by two teenaged girls who squealed with the chilly water before becoming acclimated to it. Their presence drew a crowd of boys who splashed and hollered in that particularly manic way of teenaged boys, while the girls ignored them to chat with the one boy who wasn't screeching like a fool.

After they all left we lay on the beach, soaking in the now-tolerable rays of the sun and enjoying the quiet. I was reminded that this is a rare place, with the ocean, mountains, rivers, lakes and beaches all within easy reach.

ooo, Lake Crescent is SO beautiful - but how about that sketchy stretch of highway?

Stay cool,

The highway is fine if you're careful but the lake has its own moods and weather patterns, so you can never be sure what it will be like.

You've probably heard about all the cars divers keep finding in the lake? It would have been a scary road back when it was unpaved and there was no guardrail.

A rare place indeed! It is of course unbearably hot here in D.C., and we don't have central air, only a small window AC unit in the bedroom. If I were in Chicago I could head to the lake and swim, and when I lived in Springfield, IL and Houston, TX my apartment complexes had a community pool. It's funny how so many people ask "Was it hot there?" when I mention Africa, it was actually downright CHILLY during the days and COLD at night. I think even during the hottest months there (Jan, Feb) it probably is not so hot as it is right now in the U.S!

It's funny how places are perceived to be a certain way, especially a country as diverse as Africa. People are always surprised to hear that it got colder and rained and snowed more in Arizona than it does where I live now.

I usually envy the warmer summer temperatures that other places in the country have, but not this year! The heat wave has passed and the temperature has settled into the pleasantly warm range. We don't have AC either so it was getting into the upper 80s and low 90s in the house. For two people who like to sleep in a cool bedroom, that's torture!
