Mystery Flower

Does anyone know what this is? Because I don't believe I ever planted it, yet it has appeared in my flower bed as if it was invited in. If it's a flesh-eating predator as I suspect by the tongue-like pistel and stamen, and the long hairs inside the flower, I'd really like to know.

That flower is beautiful! Unfortunately, I don't know what it is... but I'll do a little snooping and see what I can come up with. Don't you just LOVE the unexpected ones? They're so much fun! Thank you, birdy poo!

Those look a lot like Canterbury bells (campanula medium) to me and they do sometimes pop up seemingly out of nowhere. We have the white and also a few purple ones in places that I've never planted them. They are very mild mannered and don't bite. :-)

JLB, it is a lovely flower. I think what initially worried me was that the flowers took so long to open, I started to worry if they were incubating little aliens. ;P

Christina, Phew! I do believe you nailed it. Good to know that they won't defend their territory and take off a finger if I get too close.

I agree with Christina - according to other things I've read, it looks like a white campanula, also called canterbury bells. Here's a link to a purple version on someone else's blog (where I got the idea in the first place).

Now I'm jealous of you two... they look like such lovely flowers! Of course, I do not believe that I ever met a flower I didn't like...

PS - Aliens are always a possibility... keep an eye on your dog. ;)

Thanks for the links; that's a pretty serious garden she's got there!

These flowers are clearly easy to grow and the purple ones are so pretty, too, I may have to work on expanding the collection.

By the way, funny you should say that about the dog...

I just love flowers and if you have time I am featuring the mountain flowers I found on my trek at my photoblog.

I didn't know what these flowers are before nor do I know the name of the mountain flowers I saw but people are helping me with names.

I looked at your flower photos as soon as you sent me that link. You took some beautiful ones. I wish I could help with the identification, but I have enough trouble with my own flowers, obviously. ;)
