Death By Jake (for whom this site is named)

I just walked into the living room, only to be assaulted by the foulest stench ever to meet my nostrils. Jake was innocently lying on the rug and no one else was in sight. I tiptoed up to him as if stalking dangerous prey and lightly sniffed at his back. After gagging long and hard, I herded him upstairs to the bathroom.

As I was gathering towels and shampoo, I realized what the reek was. Dead seal! I have no idea how he found a decomposing seal in our backyard, but if any dog could, it would be him. If you've never smelled a rotting seal corpse, count yourself lucky. The odor should be illegal.

Jake hates water, so giving him a bath is usually no treat for anyone, but this time he stood in the tub without a struggle. No climbing the walls, no attempted escape out the back, no flying leaps over the side. Maybe he finally found the fragrance that is too much, even for him.

Sounds like you have one mischievous doggy. I've never smelled a dead seal, but when I lived in Arkansas there were skunks, and they smelled pretty terrible too.

I am lucky I have not smelled a seal or a skunks and I am afraid of dogs! But it seems you had your hands full, Lily.

Crystal, between dead seal and skunk, I would take skunk any day. Jake's starting to mellow as he gets older, but it used to be that he was always up to something, and it usually involved running away from home. In our old neighborhood he would wander until he found an open door, walk in and climb on the couch. We met a lot of people through him.

Mridula, I've met a few that made me nervous, but generally I get along with dogs. Our chocolate lab, Cooper, likes to be held on your lap, leaning back like a child. It's hard to be afraid of a dog like that.

Yeah, Labs & Golden Retrievers are pretty harmless and friendly, it's the Rottweilers that scare me!

Most Rotties I've met have been really sweet, but I make it a policy to never try to pet a strange dog of any breed if the owner isn't around.

But Rotties always seem to act like my Chihuahua is bacon. They scare me, I just don't trust that breed.

I think a lot of people get big dogs like Rotties and train them to be mean so you definitely have to be careful.

Our last dog was a Rott/Newfoundland mix and about 125 lbs. He was the most non-aggressive dog ever, but he LOVED to play with tiny dogs. Of course, this made most of their owners very nervous. One lady yanked her poodly-type dog up off the ground and into her arms by the leash when she saw us coming. Poor thing!

Jake used to race around the yard, barrel into him full blast and just bounce right off. Anyway, he was just a great dog and I still miss him.
